The first catholic church in Berlin after the reformation was built from1747 until 1773 under Friedrich II. According to plans by him and G. W. von Knobeldorff, Johann Baumann directed the construction.
The wakes is a reference to the catholic Silesians.
Since 1930 St. Hedwig is a catholic bishop church. Badly damaged in World War II, the cathedral was rebuilt from 1952 - 63 to plans by Hans Schwippert, at which time a new, reinforced concrete dome was added. The interior was also extended and modernized during reconstruction.
A technical miracle is the cupola composed of 84 reinforced concrete segments.
Remarkable is the chaste and idiosyncratic centred room conception. Modern
artworks, historical sculptures made by wood and the impressive blister organ made by the company of Klais, accentuate the sacral room.
A copy of the Pietà by Michelangelo, a Station of the Cross by Josef Hegenbarth and also a memorial chapel for the victims of the Third Reich with the sepulchre of Bernhard Lichtenberg are in the Lower Church.
In the treasure chamber you can visit a small accumulation of liturgy tackles and altar clothes.
