St. Matthias is one of the biggest Berlin catholic churches with a lively community life. The church is located in the centre of West Berlin and was inaugurated in 1895. One of the focal points of our community work is the liturgy.
St. Matthias offers you the opportunity to take part church services and meditations, to visit the church with its wonderful windows and to pray or relax.
With its 74 registers, the organ of St. Matthias is one of the biggest church organs of Berlin and known beyond the city borders.
The organ was built in 1958/74 by the company of Romanus Seifert and Sohn, Kevelaer and in 1992/1993 generally overhauled by the company of Stockmann, Werl.
The founder of the church, Matthias Aulike, had a special wish: priests from his hometown Münster, should take on the pastoral care.
This wish is still respected. For more than 100 years the priests are coming from the diocese Münster among others the later bishop from Münster and cardinal Clemens August Graf von Galen. Cardinal von Galen was beatified in 2005. At the beginning of 2007, the reliquary casket under the church window dedicated to Graf von Galen, was inaugurated.
In the church you should focus on the Mauer-Kreuz from Wilhelm Polders jun., Kevelaer.
Since the 25th commemoration day of the Berlin Wall (1986) it hangs in the Matthias Church. First, as an appeal to tear down the Berlin Wall, it hung in the Kreuzkapelle and found then, just before the wall came down, its place in the sanctuary.
