Berlin - Media City
During the last few years Berlin has developed to one of the most important media places in Germany. More than 130,000 people are employed in the media and communication industry. There is no other German city hosting more national and international radio and TV channels than Berlin. Reporting from the capital is, of course, an important aspect so that 1,000 journalists from all over the world are broadcasting the newest information to their home countries.
Media Events
Important media events are taking place to the capital such as the music fair popkomm, presentations of awards like the German and the European Film award, the golden camera and the music award Echo. The highlight is the International Berlin Film Festival where the newest films are shown and important film deals are made.
Berlin in Film
Also Hollywood appreciates Berlin as a setting since excellent working conditions are provided in the studios in Babelsberg, and the architecture from all epochs can be very well used displaying other city surroundings. In "Around the world in 80 days" the Gendarmenmarkt functioned as a film setting.
Currently blockbusters like the "Bourne Supremacy" (2004) with Matt Damon were shot here, with Berlin operating as Moscow as well. In "Beyond the Sea" (2004), with big-name star Kevin Spacey, Berlin served as setting once more including Sanssouci presented as an Italian villa.
Music Sector
Big companies like MTV, Universal and BMGSony have meanwhile moved their German headquarters to Berlin and present new and fresh music. Many of Berlin's singers and bands are nowadays very successful in Germany, for example 2Raumwohnung, Sido, Wir sind Helden, Mia, SEEED or Culcha Candela.
Berlin Press Coverage
National and international journalists are broadcasting the newest politician developments. Many public broadcasting services have their headquarters or at least a branch in the capital. The Berlin studios of Germany's most important TV channels (ARD, ZDF) are located right in the city centre.
Berlin on TV
Many current serials are taking place in Berlin using the unique variety of city surroundings and stories as well as its mixed architecture. The series "Berlin, Berlin","Edel&Starck" and the daily soap "GZSZ" have become especially popular. At present, the new telenovela "Verliebt in Berlin", with the main character Lisa fighting for the love of her boss, is on screen.

The most important Berlin newspapers are Die Welt, Der Tagesspiegel, Berliner Zeitung, Berliner Morgenpost, die TAZ und die BZ. Two-weeks entertainment listings are given in the city magazines "Tip" and "zitty" and in numerous other flyers and brochures.

Berlin is one of Germany's leading centres of publishing, where renowned publishing houses: Siedler-Verlag, Axel Springer AG, Aufbau-Verlag, Verlagshaus Markus Braun, Berlin-Verlag, Nicolai-Verlag, Cornelsen and Wissenschaftsverlag Walter de Gruyter are located.
Academies, Museums and Archives
The first address for cineastes in Berlin is the Filmhaus in Sony-Center that houses the academy for film and TV dffb, the cinematheque Stiftung Deutsche Kinemathek, the Filmmuseum Berlin and the arthouse cinema Arsenal.
